Members of Nigeria Labour Congress in Imo State on Tuesday protested in Owerri, the state capital, over lingering Industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The protesting workers who took off from the NLC secretariat in new Owerri marched through the city, causing gridlock, as they proceeded to the government house

They sang solidarity songs and insisted on speaking to the state governor, Hope Uzodiinma.

The governor bridged his convoy, came down, listened to NLC Leaders, and later addressed the protesting workers.

The NLC chairman, Philip Nwansi, who addressed the governor, said that the workers were on a solidarity march in support of ASUU, who had been on strike for five months.

The labour leader reminded the governor that the protest was not against the state government but against the Federal Government that had refused to resolve its differences with the university lecturers.

He said,” This protest is not against the state government. It is against the Federal Government that has refused to resolve its differences with ASUU. We are in solidarity with ASUU. We want the youths who had been roaming the streets for five months to go back to school. Enough is enough.”

The chairman of ASUU at Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Chinedu Ihejirika, and his counterpart from ImoState University in Owerri, Odinakachukwu Ejiogu, flayed the FG for its inability to fulfil its parts of the agreements with ASUU.

Responding, the governor said he would convey their message to the appropriate quarters.

He, therefore, called on the striking lecturers to shift grounds so that the students can go back to the school.

The governor said, ” I am in solidarity with ASUU. The Federal Government can’t do anything against the interest of the Nigerian Students. While you protest, I want to urge ASUU to consider the interest of the students above their own interests.”
